RETRIEVAL OF BALLAST WAGON YH477
With the Lepperton track extension project now largely done, and the restoration of the DSA locomotive Portland 11 heading into its later phases, there was capacity for a new project.
Well, not new but revisited.
In 2012 the society bought derailed ballast wagon, YH477, from Kiwirail. It has been sitting on the trackside of the Marton to New Plymouth Line, just south of Patea, and now was thought to be a good time to retrieve it, restore it, and put it to work.
With funding from our major benefactors, Taranaki Electricity Trust, this has been made possible.
As the Covid-19 lockdown level moved from 4 to 3, the work got under way on the first weekend of May.

This major project is largely complete, with just a few tweaks and some paperwork to complete.
PORTLAND 11 LOCOMOTIVE RESTORATION
Steady progress this year so far, and the team are now working extra days to speed things up.
